Prof. Dr. Arash Haghikia

Microbiome Personalized nutrition

I am a passionate cardiologist and intensive care physician. I hold the Chair of Cardiology at the Ruhr University Bochum and am a visiting scientist at the German Heart Center of the Charité and at the Friede Springer - Cardiovascular Prevention Center. My clinical focus is on the treatment of coronary heart disease caused by atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), myocardial infarction, valvular heart disease and heart failure. Scientifically, I am working intensively on new approaches to the prevention and treatment of metabolic and arteriosclerosis-related cardiovascular diseases. I am particularly interested in how certain environmental factors such as infections, the complex intestinal microbiome and specific metabolic products (metabolites) in the intestine can influence the risk of cardiovascular disease. Another central component of my work is research into individualized nutritional concepts that could play an important role in effectively preventing cardiovascular disease. For my research work, I have received the prestigious Wilhelm P. Winterstein Prize from the German Heart Foundation and the prestigious Hans Blömer Prize from the German Society of Cardiology, among others.
